Shiloh Tillemann-Dick, research director at the National Venture Capital Association, gave a presentation titled “State of the VC Market” during an Mtech Ventures-hosted Lunch and Learn on January 22, 2026.

The event was open to Mtech Ventures companies and the surrounding entrepreneurship and innovation community.
Tillemann-Dick shared data-driven insights and trends to explain why shifts are happening and what they mean for founders and investors. His discussion featured nationwide investment hot spots, investment by sector and state, and detailed insight into the DMV region.
Maryland is the #2 place in the country for network management software/cybersecurity investment, Tillemann-Dick stated, with additional emphasis on biotechnology, robotics, and quantum computing. For aerospace and defense, Maryland and Virginia are evenly split, in terms of activity, he said. Maryland’s biotechnology workforce has more Ph.D.s, by head count, than Massachusetts.
,Opportunities for enhancing the innovation climate in the DMV region include gaining more people who know how to start companies, as well as creating more organization around the investment community, according to Tillemann-Dick.
Mtech Ventures hosts Lunch and Learn talks for its companies every other month.
